Did you know that the first followers of Jesus didn’t call themselves “Christians”? It was actually a pejorative term used by people who looked down on the early followers of Christ. As a matter of fact, the word “Christian” is only used 3 times in the whole Bible. The most common term is disciple which is used 281 times in the New Testament.
You might say, “What’s the big deal?” I would suggest that we have lost the clarity the word “disciple” communicated about what a Follower of Christ actually is. When Jesus called His initial apprentices to “Follow Me”, it was a call to adventure and challenge, joy and pain, commitment and worldwide impact. Starting Sunday, and in the weeks ahead, we will be on a journey to grasp the clear experiences God has provided for Christ’s disciples. Are you ready for the challenge?
